just an update

hey guys.. posted pics we took outside glasshouse fish and co. while waiting for a table after the EuroFF show we had watched at PS. i posted all the pics, some ok, some mis-shots. hehe.. try guessing why serene wanted to take twice of the same shot. spot the diff yea.. serene, heh.. i didnt delete that. wat's so bad/not right abt it anyway?

anyway.. been busy finishing my geopolitics proj and i have yet more projs datelines next week and the following week. plus i have qt some lects to catch up on before my CA2s in two weeks time. so will prob be drowning myself in tons of work. nonetheless, im coping alright with school and im actually starting to miss it esp since this sem is drawing to a close real soon.

another thing that's been on my mind recently is my grandma. her condition oscillates between good and bad days and we had a scare yest morning when she had major breathing difficulties and asked to see everyone. thank god, she's alright now. i visit her whenever i can and without fail every weekend. she enjoys the weekends cuz there will be family gatherings and visitors and it will be very re nao. one thing i have to come to terms with is that she will have to leave us one day and im preparing myself for it. shit! im getting all teary again. ;p dont worry da jia, im ok. heh. my family, relatives and esp my cousins and i are very supportive and helping each other tide through this very new experience.

grandma and school projs are physically and emotionally taxing and im very aware of that so i try to eat well and rest well too. lack exercise though. heh. i do feel sluggish and lethargic at times and i think my mama can see that. so she's always nagging at me to drink liang cha la, ji jing, dang gui ren shen tang sort of stuff and etc. you guys take very good care of yourselves yar.. get sufficient rest! very impt.. :) huimin and py, jiayou for CA2 tests! huay, rem to have ur mama's chicken herbal soup too! serene, we still owe each other a conversation. heh. there! told u tititeoh is in ur sch..

also, enjoy life and laugh lots.
god bless

oh yar, when's everyone's test dates?
huimin and py when does ur sem end?

unlike our long 88 conversations, w mi being the advisor of ur kingdom? or issit a jester? O_o" i dont noe wat to say if relation to wat u said sometimes.. someone told mi b4 tt sometimes i jus got to listen coz things i say then to come across as dismissing pple as unimpt juz coz i dont feel the same way..

goosebumps and inexplicable joy

i am on my way to school now.. not exactly on my way, but i was leaving the house when the radio broadcasted 933's yin yue ri ji. well i seldom listen, but today it happened to be on la. and the story was abt 2 frens and the good times they had in sec school. i was reminded of all of us. and in between the story-telling, the dj played Mo Li. i felt goosebumps and this inexplicable joy that almost brought tears to my eyes. had wanna call up someone and ask you to listen, but well all of ya are unavailable right now, so.

i came online immediately wanting to blog and say i miss all of you a lot.. across a whole spectrum of moments from when i am really sad, to stressed up, to excited for certain reasons, or just mere proud of myself when i have done smtg brilliant in school..
during those tiny pieces of moments there's a part of me that wishes you guys can see it, or experience it with me. bc i know with a shared mutual smile, or a raised eyebrow, thots would transcend words and i'd feel as though, really, you can relate to how i am feeling at that point of time, and what i think (that for being an open book).

well, its really nice (in fact more than that) to log in and find a long, somewhat pensive letter from huay. [the tone of the letter reminds me of when jo writes to her family at home when she was alone and away in new york.. (: hee..]

i dunno what's wrong with me nowadays, i just miss you guys a lot more, and feel like crying whenever i think abt the good old days, or what i used to share with each of ya individually.. but i am fine, and i will be fine..

hope everyone is well.

A Letter Proper

Hello everyone, it's Thursday night, well it really is in the wee hours of Friday morning. I was about to write a letter to you guys and post it tomorrow since I need to post my first British Telecoms phone bill tomorrow (oh yes I've just gotten a landline it's +44(0115)9704190 and my handphone number remains if ever you guys need to call. if not it is still pretty much affordably cheaper for me to.). That means I need to get a Second Class stamp from the Post Office. But ah well, I decided to blog it so that you can read it when I publish the post.

So how's everyone? :) Life here is...good...? It's not that I have nothing much to say about my life in Nottingham, it's just I don't know where to start. Amidst the rigours of really trying to keep up with my work, I do have my moments of the pensive thoughts while walking home, and my rolling-over-with-hysteria moments with my flatmates and all. The physical details are basically as such, that I still live somewhere further away from the Main Campus of University Park where I have all my lessons, like the last academic year. I was at the Jubilee Campus, Newark Hall if you remember. This time around, I'm living with 5 other girls, in a flat at Raleigh Park, which is about a 10-minute walk from the Hopper Bus Stop at Jubilee Campus. Run a search on GoogleEarth and where you see Faraday Road and Triumph Road in Nottingham, those are some of the streets I have come to be familiar with.

And out of the 5 girls, 3 of them used to be at the Jubilee Campus, and 1 more I got to know through them as well, and so we knew one another before deciding to bunk in for Year 2. That's Ling, Jen and Prav who're from KL and Aggie who was born here. We get along mighty fine and it's cool having people I like living with.

We all have our own rooms but share the 2 toilets among us and a kitchen which is really enlarged to fit the dining table and coffee table. I have had my stint at whipping up dishes which accompanies my magazine-reading, and leaving for class with a banana in the bag while briskly walking so as to make it on time for the lectures alike. My mama had me pack in some chinese herbs and I've had chicken herbal soup just a few weeks ago. I have also, very importantly, taken along some of the chilli she made. I'm not terribly strung up about having rice everyday. In fact, I'm fine with pasta most of the time. The Singaporean in me comes through when I do have my fusilli in broth sometimes, like macaroni in soup at the school canteen.

I have classes everyday and my timetable is really quite terrific, with a hectic Thursday however. But this leaves my Fridays free, even as tutorials kick in from next week. There's plenty and plenty to read and understand, remember and apply, as you guys would know anyway. I get a kick out of speed-reading, well, not in terms of absolute speed perhaps, but in terms of how much it is accelerating, as I plough through the textbooks, lecture notes, etc. I do know the importance of reading productively though. I've also decided to lug my dear laptop to lectures for typing in notes, as well as getting the lectures down on audio recordings. And I'm also doing Spanish instead of the initial English optional modules which I wanted to do really badly. Between what my head and heart were saying, I went with my head, for a change perhaps. In any case, Spanish is great too. I crash the English lectures when I can. Does this mark some kind of a shift? I don't know, probably not. I do know that my attitude towards my Law degree has taken a turning. What turning, it's hard to say. In any case, the way I learn will all be part of the many memories I shall be taking with me from Nottingham.

My life wraps around the places I go to, the sights I see, the sounds, smells, and perhaps in my imagination even. Apart from getting down to the grind for what my academic life has in store for me, there's something special about my physical presence in Nottingham, against the greater background of England and Europe, but also against the little things like the idle chatter in the laundry room, the music I listen to (oh I am also going for a Franz Ferdinand gig on 28 November), the frosty wind skipping across the hills. Looking out of the window and into the distance sometimes, other times alerted by what sounds like gunshots in the middle of the night, and looking down to the ground 3 floors below and wondering who's come to visit when the doorphone rings, all these. I have probably, in the course of studying in Nottingham, taken more from her than I would have imagined. Of course I still am the girl you guys bade goodbye at the airport last year, at the very core. It's just that I have had the opportunity, for which I am infinitely grateful to my parents, to lead a life here, albeit being a mere few years. I miss home but I know it isn't going to be easy to leave Nottingham eventually.

The overseas experience isn't always as glamorous as they have on the glossy posters, nor is it as hedonistic as eagerly awaited by some of us who feel stifled at home. It really depends on how one has decided to lead her life, just as she would at any other time. Having chose to come, what I pack along from home is nothing short of the maximum I can replicate and recall, and that can be minimised to be put aside, giving way to what I have and build in front of me here. What this means for me, I guess we shall see in many more years to come.

I shall still try to do a better job of catching up and updating everyone at home and abroad. What might seem a retreat, or an MIA act, is really a busy, possibly fruitful and personal life in its course.

All right then, till my next letter, keep happy and safe. Will take photos and post them in time to come.

for fun

This is crazy, but it really works!!!!! Try it....

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH
This is pretty neat

DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!
It takes less than a minute .
Work this out as you read ...

Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!

This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10)

2 Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50 -- I'll wait while you get the calculator

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1755 ....If you haven't, add 1754.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number

The first digit of this was your original number(i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).
The next two numbers are YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!)

THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2005) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS.

cudnt decide which picture i liked better :) Posted by Picasa

haha my head is damn big  Posted by Picasa

Hey ppl! lets do a gang baby photo collection!! (i have been dying to see fel's baby photo again.. i rem you look like a cute lil boy! haha.) so take a pic (using digi cam. like laoda loves doing this kinda thing right? use a camera to take a photo of a photo....) of ur baby photo and post it here.. n maybe i'll do a collage when we've all assembled. heehee! ;D

first, don't ask her to be feminine. second, don't let her drink over three glasses, she'll beat someone. at a cafe, drink coffee instead of coke or juice. if she hits you, act like it hurts. if it hurts, act like it doesn't. on your 100th day together, give her a rose during her class, she'll like it a lot. make sure you learn fencing and squash. also, be prepared to go to prison sometimes. if she says she'll kill you, don't take it lightly, you'll feel better. if her feet hurts, exchange shoes with her. finally, she likes to write, encourage her...

guess!

Weird and wonderful vocabulary from around the world

How come only German has a word for 'a person who leaves without paying the bill' (Zechpreller) or that Albanians need 27 words for moustache? A compelling new book uncovers the globe's most weird, wonderful - and meaningful - words.

"The Greeks had a word for it," we used to say, when stumped for the precise way to describe something. Now, thanks to Adam Jacot de Boinod and his collection of bizarre foreign words, we discover that the Malays, Hawaiians and Sumatrans had, and still have, words for it too. There is a word for the fold of skin under your chin (alang - it's Nicaraguan). There is a word for the ring you put in the nose of a calf in order to stop it suckling its mother (oorxax, and, as you know, it's from the Khakas region of Siberia). There is, thank God, a word that sums up that annoying thing you do when your taxi is 20 minutes late and you're too restless to wait for the doorbell to ring. It's iktsuarpok - "to go outside often to see if someone is coming."
Learning a foreign language is, of course, the surest and fastest track to becoming familiar with another culture. But the words themselves offer hundreds of revealing clues to the preoccupations of that culture. Everyone knows that Inuit-speaking races can call on 30-odd words for snow. Adam Jacot de Boinod first became entranced by language when he discovered 27 words for "moustache" in an Albanian dictionary - and another 27 for "eyebrows". A world of bushy machismo and stolid dignity sprang to life before his eyes. He began hanging out in second-hand bookshops, looking for foreign dictionaries and the tiny revelations contained therein. He made lists of his favourite "words with no equivalent in the English language" - like, say, tsuji-giri, a Japanese word from samurai days meaning, "to try out a new sword on a passer-by" (thanks a bunch, Toshiro), or the stoic German term Torschlusspanik, meaning "the fear of diminishing opportunities as one gets older".
His book is destined to be the Eats, Shoots & Leaves of the autumn. Where else could you discover the gradations of bowing in Japan, from eshaku (a slight bow of about 15 degrees) to pekopeko, "bowing one's head repeatedly in a fawning or grovelling manner"? Or find that there are 18 words for "you" in Vietnamese, depending on whether you're addressing one person or several, young or old, formally or informally? Or learn that the French invented the word ordinateur in order not to have to say "computer", because con is slang for vagina and pute slang for whore, the combination of which is literally unspeakable in haunts of the chivalrous.
Most intriguing of all, however, are the words whose meanings seem ludicrously over-precise - like the Persian word nakhur which means "a camel that won't give milk until her nostrils have been tickled", or the meaning of tingo itself.
These are more than funny foreign vocabularies; they are tiny windows into the way other people live, and the obsessions that drive them. We may be amused by their lexicon of everyday words - but we can be certain they'd be equally amused by our vocabulary of "multi-tasking" and "sound-bite" and "over-sharing". By our unguarded linguistic displays shall we be known.

i met

zeyuan at hg mrt just now! wat a surprise. he looked rather tired though.. and said he almost missed his stop. today is a serendipitious day.. and mr. huayuan completed it with the encounter. haha.

oh to let u in on why its a serendipitious day.. rem eye for a guy 2? i was kinda hooked on the show right? (fel u hafta rem!) and i said i like one of the guys there right? heh heh! met him today in town.. its totally ecstatic la. i have a knack for coincidences.. just wondering when will the mr right come along.

hahahaha.

term break is here

yeap.. so my one week plus a bit break is here.. hoping to meet up with you guys like a for meal? and indulge in our Bishan J8 coffeebean treats of all my fave stuff -- (unless there's something more exciting than this that we can do la.. or i can pop by NUS.. but then again, eeks! no offense but the fengshui there like not veh good for me. haha.. and you all have no cute guys to intro.. so that's quite sian. haha. kidding! I M NOT bimbotic.)
hmm updates. lets see.
highlight was some SPG in my class who seems to have problem with me. found her glaring and staring at me the whole time during class every week. kinda gets unnerving maaannn..
learning from THE laoda that just glare back at her. will try. just remind me again on tues night! heehee.
this fel ar.. when are u updating the FOG photos?
blog is getting dormant. everyone.. say something. haha. like where is py huh?
other interesting stuff includes me seeing this line on papers that says "The tofu princess"! haha. thot of huay la.
my two presentations this week went quite well other than the revelation of how some overrated cute guys in my class deliberately mark us down.. i see how my school is so political and pple are scheming. which is like the real world.
this week i have been listening to cds (that i bur*t) when we were in jc. a pleasant surprise was hearing "mo li" out of the blue. the feeling is really nice. and also on the playlist, the usual jay and jazz.
i watched a walk to remember.. cried a bit.. i love the movie. have u guys watched it before? you should if you're in those sappy i-need-an-excuse-to-cry-and-still-feel-that-life-is-beautiful kinda mood.
i woke too early today and tuition was cancelled. feeling sleepy already, but have to go skool soon. i enjoy waking up in the morning (if i could even manage to in the first place.) and the weather nowadays is just cool - like literally.
aim for this break - i intend to rest up and recharge. trying to swim more when there's sun to make up for lost time and play a bit.. maybe watch lotsa VCDs.
okie. that's my version of a f-ing documentary style blogging! heh!
meet up SOON yeah? (i mean that!)
